Rice Nutrient Management Workshops
Following an invitation by Northern Latin America (INPOFOS) Director, Dr. José Espinosa, Dr. Christian Witt, Director of the Joint Mission PPI/PPIC and IPI in Southeast Asia (SEAP) visited Costa Rica, Venezuela, and Peru from May 20 to June 4. Coffee prices yield and profits
After a long period of low prices, international coffee prices have finally reached profitable levels for the growers. However, history repeats itself as in many other occasions with plantation crops. Higher coffee prices have found producers in many regions of Latin America with low levels of production as a result of reduced, or even complete elimination of inputs, mainly fertilizers. >more



Banana insurance in Colombia
The Colombian Ministry of Agriculture recently announced the initiation of a banana crop insurance program. The program will cover 31,000 hectares in Uraba and 11,300 ha in El Madgalena - a total of 853 farms. >more



Pineapple exports are steadily growing in Costa Rica
The value of pineapple exports in Costa Rica recently approached those of coffee, which is historically the leading export crop for the country. This trend is a reflection of a continued fall in coffee exports, a symptom of long standing conditions of poor prices. There is solid efforts to expand pineapple production in the south and Atlantic areas of the country. >more



Increased banana fruit exports
Ecuadorian banana fruit exports have steadily increased during the last three years. In 2002, total income was 14 percent higher (US$ 981.4 million) compared with 2001 (US$ 864.5 million). Total income is presently approaching levels achieved around 1997 which marked the previous high. >more
