2005 Western Canada Agronomy Workshop - July 19-21
The 2005 Western Canada Agronomy Workshop was held in Portage la Prairie and Carmen Manitoba on July 19-21. Both a Crop Diagnostic field day in Carmen on July 19 and 21, and a workshop in Portage la Prairie on July 20, were attended by Crop Advisors from western Canada. Presentation made at the workshop are attached as either Power Point slide sets, pdf files or MS-Word documents. Please read on for further information. >more

Spring Wheat Cultivar Response to Potassium Chloride Fertilization (Manitoba)
Chloride (Cl) is one of the 17 essential plant nutrients required for plant growth and development. Chloride plays a major role in plant function, including photosynthesis, enzyme activation, nutrient transport, water movement in cells, stomatal activity, accelerated plant development, reduced lodging and improved disease suppression and tolerance. Research across the Great Plains has identified that there is a strong varietal response of cereal crops to soil Cl levels. To evaluate the effect of soil and fertilizer Cl on spring annual wheat cultivars common to western Canada, a trial was conducted at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Brandon Research Centre between 1996 and 1998. A selection of Canadian and adapted American hard red spring wheat varieties, along with Canada Prairie Spring, Canada Extra Strong, and Canada Western Amber Durum varieties were grown on low to moderate Cl testing soils. The attached article provides details on the study and some of the challenges in evaluation of Cl. >more
You Can't Afford to Cheat on Soil Testing
When commodity prices are low and input costs are high, farmers might be tempted to cut back by not soil testing. This is poor management, because expenditures associated with soil testing are low…a small fraction of the cost of fertilizer application. The potential benefits of soil testing far outweigh costs involved. >more
