Petrobras 2nd Seminar on Fertilizer Technology
Dr. Prochnow at Seminar. | | Dr. Luís Ignacio Prochnow, IPNI Brazil Program Director, was asked to present a talk at the 2nd Seminar on Fertilizer Technology, organized by Petrobras at Rio de Janeiro on April 16 to 18. The main purpose of the event was to discuss fertilizer production and utilization in Brazil. It is predicted that the country may have to import up to 82% of its future fertilizer requirements and the strategy for fertilizer availability and delivery to field pads have to be discussed now or Brazil could face serious problems in the near and medium future. One of the main decisions is whether the country should create conditions for a new N fertilizer plant. The event was an excellent forum for discussions. "It was great that IPNI Brazil was invited to participate and give a seminar at this important event," said Dr. Prochnow. His seminar was entitled "Future Trends in Plant Nutrition." Among other topics, he called attention to world fertilizer status, research in new products, and trends that should influence crop nutrition and fertilizer utilization in the future. |
Management of Sustainable Agriculture Production Systems
Dr. Prochnow is second from right during the debate after Simpas seminar. | | Dr. Prochnow gave a seminar entitled "Soil Chemical Management in Sustainable Agricultural Production Systems" during the Integrated Symposium on the Management of Sustainable Agriculture Production Systems (SIMPAS) on April 7 to 9, at Vitória da Conquista, Bahia. This event takes place three times a year throughout Brazil and is organized by various sectors of agribusiness. IPNI Brazil has been supporting the event since its first meeting in Jaboticabal, São Paulo. The event attracted 150 participants, mostly farmers and agronomists. Dr. Prochnow discussed the main aspects for efficient soil management with emphasis on soil fertility evaluation and control. After the speech there was a debate. The next event should happen in July in Imperatriz, Maranhão, and IPNI Brazil plans to participate again. |
Symposium on Nutrition and Soil Chemical Management for Maize Production Systems
More than 450 corn producers and agronomists from all over Brazil attended a symposium to discuss corn nutrition at the University of São Paulo in Piracicaba from April 23 to 25. Researchers and specialists were invited from select Institutions to give seminars. IPNI Brazil offered a seminar on rational use of phosphorus in agriculture with emphasis on maize production systems.
"The number of attendees and relevance of the event should translate into better management of soil for corn production all over Brazil and IPNI was very happy to be able to make a contribution," declared Dr. Prochnow. Besides the seminar, an article on the topic was published in the event proceedings. Authored by Silvia R.S. Abdalla and Luís I. Prochnow, the publication is a chapter of a booklet edited for the Symposium. The article reviews P use in maize and gives hints as to how to manage soils and P sources while aiming for high profits in Brazil's production systems.
